Keys were and remain potent and emotive symbols for nurses and service users alike who found themselves in psychiatric hospitals. Most obviously, those who hold the keys, hold the power. Many nurses retained their keys that were often given to them on employment of finishing training. Your thoughts, reflections and comments are very welcome.

Hi Richard, I’ve been both a Psych Nurse and a patient!!!!! I well remember the old big brass keys, their weight & the power they held and yielded! The difference between the one with no check and one with a check is you could “check lock a door with checked key which junior staff could not unlock! I nursed at the end of the “dark old days” and I’ve seen those keys especially the charge nurse keys used as a weapon to strike patients. Inconceivable to most people today. What’s your story?
